Mike Van Acker - MC
Comedian and Master of Ceremonies
If you've been to HOTD before, chances are you've seen Mike act as our Master of Ceremonies. He multitasks as a Comedian, Photographer and all-'round great guy. We've asked him back to MC again this year and can't wait for his lively, mildly amusing persona on stage to kick us into 2017!
We asked Mike a few questions about himself and his work.
Your name is…?
Mike van Acker; my mother-in-law calls me Michael. You shouldn’t though.
Where do you work/what is your studio name?
I wear many hats in my working life; I’ve spent over 20 years working as a stand-up comedian and/or MC at corporate events and comedy clubs both within Australia and overseas; I’ve done some radio (Triple M, B105, and 612 ABC), and run a small company that provides trivia nights to pubs and clubs and corporate events..
I also work with Andrea Thompson Photography. I second shoot pretty much whatever she is main-shooting, I also look after all her on-line stuff, make props, carry stuff and massage shoulders when they get tired from editing! I am her main support person, chief advisor and problem solver and I take it seriously!
Where are you based?
How long have you been in business in your field/s?
Comedy over 20 years; I took an interest in photography with Drea in late 2006 (she’d already been at it 15 years by then) and got a lot more serious with it in the last few years.
What genre do you shoot?
We shoot happy, nervous people on one of the biggest days of their lives. I love it – it really is a very cool thing to be around people on their wedding day, and I like to think I add to it for them – I’m realising more and more that comedy and photography are two skill-sets that work quite well together.
How did you get started in your field?
I got into comedy as soon as ‘new wave’ stand up started in Brisbane in 1991. Prior to that I was actually a singing telegram guy (I was young, I needed the money!!) was a tough gig, but I learnt to deal with hecklers at a million back yard parties where there was no mic, no lights and no staging…
What is your Elevator Speech? When someone asks what you do, how do you answer in 60 seconds?
Drea and I are photographers; She’s awesome, been shooting for 20 years and her clients adore her. I can lift heavy things... (this is all I need, coz they laugh and then ask a question).
How can people find you?
What gear/software/tool could you not live without?
I find taking a camera along to the shoots is handy.
Mac or PC?
Look I realise among photographers it’s not really PC to be using PC but I’m still PC right now because I don’t know how quickly I’ll pick up Mac stuff. Eventually, I’ll change, but am PC right now.
Who inspires you and why?
Good photographers inspire me. Anyone who has taken the time to learn the craft and within that knowledge is able to forge their own style is to be admired. I am inspired by the photog’s I’ve met that are ethical, original, focused and looking to be even better. I have noticed that generally photographers are a happy bunch…
Awards & Accolades:
‘Clubs Qld Comedian of the Year’ a few times, also a ‘Best Newcomer On-Air’ from back in the breakfast radio days. I received awesome reviews for a show I did at my nephew’s birthday party once as well.
